MEDIA LAWYER

Responsible for: advising our media clients on all aspects of editorial and regulatory law, and litigation

The post requires the successful candidate to:
• Undertake a full range of existing and new cases for clients;
• Support others in the team with any specific business development and marketing activities, and to develop client work and fee income as part of the appropriate business and strategic plans;
• Work with the Unit Leader and others within the wider unit and DR team, as required;
• Meet appropriate quality standards of service and comply with agreed standards policies;
• Meet all Key Performance Indicators and targets and any other broader objectives as agreed on a quarterly and annual basis;
• Specifically, the successful candidate will be advising our publishing clients on a variety of matters, including:
• Vetting articles, advertisements, and promotions prior to publication;
• Advising clients in respect of post-publication complaints;
• Challenging Court reporting restrictions, when appropriate;
• Assisting in the conduct of libel, privacy, confidentiality, and IP litigation;
• Occasionally defending clients in criminal prosecutions;
• Advising on regulatory matters, including those concerning the ASA, the PCC, Ofcom, and the ICO;
• Advising on all aspects of data protection, elections, and freedom of information law;

Skills and Attributes:
• The successful candidate will have (or show an aptitude for):
• Technical knowledge of all aspects of media and regulatory law, and the Civil Procedure Rules;
• Experience of business development and marketing activities, aimed at increasing the firm’s client base;
• The ability to work and to flourish within a demanding team;
• Excellent all round communication skills, including the ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships;
• The ability to collaborate and work effectively with other colleagues internally, both within the unit and the wider Dispute Resolution team, and across a variety of practice areas;
• A commitment to producing work of the highest standard;
• A commitment to ongoing professional and personal development including self-awareness and self-reflection and continuous improvement;
• A track record of meeting targets and objectives;
• A commitment to knowledge management and knowledge sharing.
